Preparation for increase in SC/ST reservation in Karnataka

Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot has approved an ordinance to increase the SC/ST reservation in the state. According to news agency PTI, now the Scheduled Castes will get 17% reservation in the electoral state Karnataka instead of the existing 15%.


With the passage of the ordinance, which was as per the Justice Nagmohan Das Committee report, the reservation for Scheduled Tribes will now be reduced to 7% from the existing 3%.


The state cabinet had cleared the ordinance a few days back, and it got the governor's nod yesterday, Sunday, reports PTI.

"Our government went ahead with a commitment to increase reservation. This is a gift from our government to SC/STs," Bommai was quoted as saying by PTI.


Benefits of SC/ST Reservation in Karnataka


The purpose of the ordinance is to provide for reservation of seats in educational institutions in Karnataka and reservation of appointments or posts in services under the state for persons belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.


The gazette notification states that after the inclusion of a few more communities, there has been a huge increase in the number of castes. It said that there has been a rapid increase in the total population of SCs and STs in the state.


The notification further states that in 1976, in accordance with the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Order (Amendment) Act, 1976 (Central Act 108 of 1976), the geographical boundaries attached to castes were removed, thereby increasing the population of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. There was an extraordinary increase. STs in the state, PTI reported.


The move is being seen as an attempt by the BJP government in Karnataka to woo the SC/ST communities ahead of the assembly elections, which are almost six months away.
