Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday launched 75 Digital Banking Units (DBUs) in 75 districts with an aim to promote financial inclusion.
The ceremony was attended by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das through virtual mode, reported ANI.
75 DBUs were established in 75 districts of the country to commemorate 75 years of independence of the country.
According to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), the DBUs will be brick-and-mortar outlets that will provide people with a variety of digital banking facilities like opening savings accounts, balance-checks, printing passbooks, fund transfers, investment. Fixed deposits, loan applications, stop payment instructions for checks issued, credit and debit cards applications, tax and bill payments and nominations.
The PMO statement said that DBU will enable customers to provide affordable, convenient access to banking products and services and an enhanced digital experience throughout the year. The DBU is being set up to ensure that the benefits of digital banking reach every nook and corner of the country and cover all the States and Union Territories.
11 public sector banks, 12 private sector banks and one small finance bank are participating in this effort. It said they will spread digital financial literacy and have a special emphasis on cyber security awareness and customer education on security measures.
In addition, there should be adequate digital mechanism for real time assistance and redressal of customer complaints arising out of business and services offered by DBUs directly or through trade facilitators and correspondents.
