Additional SP Mahesh Meghnawar told the media that a case has been registered against nine people for encroaching on the ASI heritage structure and the accused have not been arrested yet.


A case was registered against nine people and four arrested in Karnataka's Bidar district on Thursday after a group of local Dussehra procession people barged into Mahmood Gawan madrassa and offered prayers, police said.


After a video of a mob worshiping inside the madrasa went viral, members of the Muslim community staged a protest outside the local police station demanding action against the accused.


He also alleged that the structure of the madrasa was damaged after a mob broke a coconut during the puja. However, the police did not confirm the allegation. Additional Superintendent of Police Mahesh Meghnawar told reporters that a case has been registered against nine people for illegally entering the heritage structure.

A person named Syed Mubhashir Ali has registered a case against nine people based on a complaint at Market police station.


The Madrasa is a heritage building maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Built in the 1460s, the ancient structure reflects the regional style of Indo-Islamic architecture under the Bahmani Sultanate. The heritage structure has been placed in the list of monuments of national importance.


Following the incident, a heavy police force was deployed outside the madrasa, officials said.
