The weather forecast agency has issued a red alert for Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura on Tuesday indicating heavy to very heavy and extremely heavy rainfall under the influence of Cyclone Sitarang. It has caused some damage to the northeastern states of India including Assam and Mizoram.

Cyclone Sitarang damages parts of Assam

The situation in Assam remained grim on Tuesday as floods caused by cyclonic storm 'Sitang' affected around 1100 people in 83 villages. Several houses were damaged due to Cyclone Sitarang, which brought heavy rain and storm in Assam.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, 1146 people have been affected by the storm. According to officials quoted by ANI, Sitarang has damaged 325.501 hectares of crops.

Several trees and electric poles were also uprooted in different parts of Nagaon district of the state due to the cyclonic storm that came on Monday night.

According to the ANI report, several houses in Kaliabor, Bamuni, Sakmuthia Tea Garden and Borligaon areas of central Assam district have been damaged due to the storm. No casualties have been reported in the area so far from the storm.

Five houses damaged in Mizoram

At least five houses and two relief camps in Mizoram's Mamit and Siaha districts were damaged due to heavy rain accompanied by strong wind under the influence of cyclone 'Sitang', an official said on Tuesday. An official gave this information on Tuesday.

The torrential rains caused landslides and uprooted trees on several highways in different parts of the northeastern state, he said.

Two houses, one of which was newly constructed, were damaged late Monday night in Mamit district bordering Tripura.

In Siaha, three houses and two relief camps where Myanmar refugees are staying were also damaged by heavy rains on October 25, the official said, adding that detailed reports from other districts are awaited.

Heavy rain coupled with strong winds also disrupted power supply in some parts of the northeastern state.

Meanwhile, all schools in Aizawl, Lunglei and Serchhip districts of south Mizoram remained closed on Tuesday in view of heavy rains.

Sitang spared West Bengal

There was no damage to West Bengal, as the Sitarang cyclone slid off the state's coast and crossed the Bangladesh coast. The IMD said that the weather in South West Bengal will improve gradually from the forenoon.

The West Bengal government had advised people to take precautionary measures in view of the weather forecast regarding the cyclonic storm.

Cyclone Sitang devastated Bangladesh
