Chhath Puja is mainly celebrated in India and Nepal in Bihar, Jharkhand and Eastern Uttar Pradesh.

Chhath Puja 2022: It is dedicated to the ancient Hindu Vedic deity Surya and Shashthi Devi. It is also known as Surya Shashthi, Chhath, Mahaparva, Chhath Parva, Dala Puja, Pratihara and Dala Chhath.

After Diwali, people start preparing for Chhath Puja, a four-day festival especially 'Purvanchali'. It is mainly celebrated in India and Nepal in Bihar, Jharkhand and eastern Uttar Pradesh.

It is dedicated to the ancient Hindu Vedic deity Surya and Shashti Devi. It is also known as Surya Shashthi, Chhath, Mahaparva, Chhath Parva, Dala Puja, Pratihara and Dala Chhath.

As per the rituals of Chhath Puja, women observe a fast for the well being of their sons and happiness of their family. They also offer Arghya to Lord Surya and Chhathi Maiya.

Why is Chhath Puja celebrated?

Chhath Puja has special significance as it revolves around the source of energy, the Sun God. This is done to seek blessings from the Sun God for a healthy, happy and prosperous life. People believe that sunlight cures many diseases. It has a healing effect that can benefit sick people.

Devotees can also reap medicinal benefits by taking a dip in the holy river. The main objective of Chhath Puja is to help the Vratis to gain mental and physical strength as well as mental purity. The festival requires utmost cleanliness to be maintained.

When will Chhath Puja be celebrated this year?

This year Chhath Puja is starting from today i.e. 28th October, while the last day of Puja is 31st October, Monday. People celebrate Chhath festival and observe rigorous rituals each day. According to the Drik Panchang, sunrise on Chhath Puja will be at 06:43 in the morning and sunset at 06:03 in the evening. Shashthi Tithi will start from 05:49 am on 30th October and will end on 31st October at 03:27 am.

Chhath Puja: What are the Rituals and Traditions?

People across the country celebrate Chhath Puja by following various rituals. These rituals are followed in the four days of Chhath Puja,

Day 1: On the first day, also known as Kaddu Bhaat or Nahai Khai, Parvaitins (main worshipers who observe a fast) cook satvik Kaddu Bhaat with lentils and serve it as 'bhog' to the deity in the afternoon. Huh.

Day 2: On the second day, also known as Kharna, Parvaitin cooks roti and rice kheer and serves it as 'bhog' to the 'Chandradevata' (the moon god).

Day 3: On the third main day of Chhath Puja, a full day's fast is observed without water. The main ritual of the day is to offer Arghya to the setting sun.

Day 4: Dashari Arghya is offered to the rising sun on the last day of Chhath and it is known as Usha Arghya. The 36-hour fast is broken after offering Arghya to the Sun.
