 11 killed, 38 injured in bus fire in Maharashtra's Nashiko


Nashik Fire: The video shows a huge ball of fire engulfing the bus as firefighters tried to douse the flames.

At least 11 people were killed and 38 injured when a bus caught fire in Maharashtra's Nashik this morning.


The bus caught fire after it collided with a trailer truck carrying diesel on the Nashik-Aurangabad highway, he said.


Nashik Deputy Commissioner of Police Amol Tambe said, "Most of the dead were passengers of the bus - a sleeper coach. The injured have been taken to the hospital for treatment."


He said a case has been registered and investigation is on to ascertain the exact cause of the fire.

Witnesses said the accident happened around 5.15 am after which they called the police and an ambulance.


They said the fire was so severe that they could not do anything to save the passengers.


Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced financial assistance of ₹ 2 lakh for families who lost a member in an accident. ₹50,000 will be given to the injured.


Chief Minister Eknath Shinde also announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of those killed in the accident.



State minister Dada Bhuse said that the Maharashtra government would bear the cost of the treatment of the injured.


Officials said the death toll in the accident could rise as some of the injured were in critical condition.
