In 2022–2023, the monthly per capita grain consumption in rural India dropped below 10 kilograms

According to a comprehensive report on the Household Consumption Expenditure Survey (HCES) distributed by the government's Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) on June 7, cereal consumption decreased to 8.05 kg in urban India compared to 9.32 kg in 2011–12, while it decreased to 9.61 kg in households in rural areas from 11.23 kg during the same period.

Cereal consumption fell to 8.05 kg in 2022–2023 in urban India from 9.32 kg in 2011–12, while it fell to 9.61 kg in rural families from 11.23 kg in the same time.


West Bengal and Odisha had the greatest monthly per capita consumption of grains among the states, with 11.23 kg and 10.45 kg, respectively, while Bihar and Chhattisgarh topped the list for urban regions.

In terms of cereal consumption, rice accounted for a larger proportion of total per capita consumption in rural households (55.35 kg) than wheat (40.93 kg). In urban India, rice accounted for 53.20 kg and wheat for 44.53 kg in 2022–2023.


Additionally, the percentage of total spending that goes on grains ranges from 3 percent in rural India (Haryana, Kerala, as well as Punjab) to 7 percent in Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal. The percentage in urban regions ranges from 3 percent in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Punjab, Haryana, and Karnataka to 6 percent in Bihar and Jharkhand.


The proportion of monthly per capita consumption expenditure (MPCE) on cereals in the rural food basket dropped from 10.69 percent in 2011–12 to 4.89 percent in 2022–2023 (Figure 2). As vegetables saw a tiny decline in consumption expenditure, milk and milk products saw a modest increase.

Food items' weight in the MPCE decreased from 42.62 percent in 2011–12 to 46.38 percent in 2022–2023 for rural India and 52.90 percent for urban India.
